Everything you need to know about stream overlays, alerts, emotes, and channel branding for Twitch, YouTube, and TikTok Live.
Why Stream Overlays Matter
Your stream overlay is the visual frame that surrounds your content. It communicates your brand identity, provides information to viewers, and creates a professional appearance that sets you apart from thousands of other creators. A well-designed overlay package makes your channel look polished and intentional, which directly impacts viewer retention and subscriber conversion.
In this guide, we cover the different types of overlays you need, platform-specific design requirements, core design principles, and how to integrate alerts and transitions. AnimArts offers complete stream overlay packages starting at $200, and we are sharing the design knowledge behind our work.
Types of Stream Overlays
A complete overlay package typically includes several distinct scenes that you switch between during a broadcast. Here are the essential types:
Gameplay Overlay
This is your main streaming overlay, visible for the majority of your broadcast. It frames your game or content window with branded elements such as a webcam border (or VTuber model frame), recent events panel, chat widget area, social media handles, and any sponsorship logos. The key principle here is balance: the overlay should enhance the viewing experience without covering important content.
Starting Soon Screen
Displayed before you go live, the Starting Soon screen tells early viewers that the stream is about to begin. It typically includes your channel branding, the stream title or schedule, a countdown timer or animated element, and social media links. This screen sets the tone for the stream and keeps viewers engaged while they wait.
BRB (Be Right Back) Screen
When you need to step away during a stream, the BRB screen replaces your camera or model feed. It should maintain your branding, include a message that you will return shortly, and optionally show a chat window or playlist. Some creators add ambient animations to keep the screen visually interesting.
Ending Screen
The Ending screen plays at the conclusion of your stream. It thanks viewers for watching, promotes your social media, teases the next stream, and may include a follow or subscribe call to action. A well-designed ending screen leaves a positive final impression.
Offline Banner
Your offline banner is displayed on your channel page when you are not streaming. It represents your brand 24/7 and should include your logo, schedule information, and social links.
Platform-Specific Dimensions
Different platforms have different resolution standards. Designing for the correct dimensions ensures your overlays look crisp and properly scaled.
Twitch
- Stream resolution: 1920 by 1080 pixels (16:9).
- Panel images: 320 pixels wide, height varies (typically 100 to 300 pixels).
- Emotes: Must be provided at 28x28, 56x56, and 112x112 pixels.
- Sub badges: 18x18, 36x36, and 72x72 pixels.
- Offline banner: 1920 by 1080 pixels.
YouTube Live
- Stream resolution: 1920 by 1080 pixels (standard) or 2560 by 1440 pixels (1440p).
- Channel banner: 2560 by 1440 pixels (safe area 1546 by 423 pixels).
- Thumbnails: 1280 by 720 pixels.
TikTok Live
- Stream resolution: 1080 by 1920 pixels (9:16 vertical). This is the opposite aspect ratio from Twitch and YouTube, requiring a completely different layout approach.
- Safe zones: TikTok's UI overlays significant portions of the screen with chat, gifts, and buttons. Design your overlay content to avoid the bottom third and left side of the screen.
If you stream on multiple platforms, you need separate overlay versions optimized for each format. AnimArts includes multi-platform variants in our overlay packages.
Design Principles for Effective Overlays
Consistency with Your Brand
Your overlay should match your VTuber model's color palette, aesthetic style, and overall vibe. If your model is a pastel-colored character, your overlay should not use aggressive neon colors. Consistency across all visual assets strengthens brand recognition.
Readability at a Distance
Viewers watch streams on a variety of devices, from large monitors to small phone screens. Text in overlays must be large enough to read even at reduced resolution. Use high-contrast text and avoid thin, decorative fonts for information-bearing elements like social handles or event names.
Minimalism Over Clutter
The most effective overlays are restrained. Every element should serve a purpose. If a decorative element does not contribute to brand identity or viewer information, remove it. Overcrowded overlays feel amateurish and distract from the actual content.
Animation with Purpose
Subtle animations (floating particles, gentle pulsing, slow color shifts) add polish without distraction. However, aggressive or rapid animations compete for viewer attention and can be fatiguing during long streams. Animate intentionally.
Alerts and Transitions
Animated Alerts
Follow alerts, subscription alerts, donation alerts, and raid alerts are triggered automatically by platform events. These should be branded to match your overlay theme and include sound effects. Keep alert durations between two and five seconds -- long enough to be noticed, short enough not to disrupt content.
Stinger Transitions
Stinger transitions are short animations that play when you switch between scenes in OBS (for example, from Starting Soon to Gameplay). A well-designed stinger that uses your brand's motifs creates a polished, television-quality feel. These are typically one to two seconds long with a full-screen wipe effect.
Emotes at Small Sizes
Twitch and YouTube emotes must be legible at very small sizes (28x28 pixels on Twitch). Design emotes with simple shapes, limited colors, and strong silhouettes. Avoid fine details that disappear at low resolution. Test every emote at its smallest display size before finalizing.
